“The government will go after a few of these in the coming days,” she said.

“But they are extremely small and it’s unlikely that they would reach the same level of damage as the Grenfell Tower.”

The minister added: “The Government’s priority must be to make sure the emergency services are safe and that people who are at risk get the support they need so they can be helped as quickly as possible.”

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Twitter: “If @Eoin_May can guarantee no deaths to firefighters in #London, she deserves to be PM of Britain.”

Grenfell Tower, part of a tower block close to the Victoria (Victoria Embankment) area near the Royal National park, was badly damaged by the blaze, with residents having to flee their homes because of the high volume of smoke.

A total of 70 people are confirmed to have died at the scene while 15 are missing. More than 40 firefighters are reported to have been injured.

More than 300 residents of the tower have been taken to five hospitals and many remain unaccounted for.
